Pellet mills come in different styles and diesel powered pellet mill is one of the most common ones.

Most biomass materials such as sawdust contain a kind of biological element which arts as the binder in the pellet mill. During the compressing, the lignin will be softened under pressure and heat generated by the pellet dies and rollers. Then glossy pellets will be formed after passing through the pellet die. For the materials which contain abundant lignin, no extra additive is needed during the pelletizing, but for the materials like peanut shell or wheat stock which do not have enough lignin, extra additive is necessary. There are various additives for diesel powered pellet mill: vegetable oil, dried distillers grains and colza cake are all good options.

Vegetable Oil

Vegetable oil is the most common use additive, which is inexpensive, easily achievable and friendly to the environment. We can use peristaltic pump to add them into the feedstock.

Oilseed Crops

Dried distillers grains and colza cake are all oilseed crops. They are low in density and cheap in price. Oilseed crops can help reduce the resistance between the pellet mill parts and materials during the pelletizing, and then the pellets will become more smooth and shiny.
