Agricultural biomass generally does not require such primary reduction. But whereas most wood materials arrive in a form compatible to conventional conveying systems, extra arrangements are usually necessary for agricultural feedstock. Plant straw is generally received as bales weighing up to 500 kilograms. The bale may not be able to enter the system without extra planning. For pellet production the straw, or suchlike baled material, should first be first debaled and chopped, ideally to within 17 millimeters.

With straw, workers should be cautious of the high concentrations of bacteria and inhalable toxins that exist in the storage area and near shredders. To minimize the exposure to micro-organisms employees must wear respiratory protection. Straw has higher dust potential than wood chips, but usually the content of microorganisms is higher per milligram of wood dust than with straw dust.
