Many people have the wrong idea of making good pellets. They think quality pellets are only depends on quality pelletizer machine. Pelletizer machine does play a important role in pellet making production. But raw material and hammer mill are also highly significant. Referring to raw material, the moisture content is one of the key points. To produce better quality pellets, you are supposed to control the moisture percentage of your material precisely. Hammer mill is another key factor that you need to pay attention to.

Hammer mill is used for reducing the size of raw material

Hammer mill is used for reducing the size of raw material. However you cannot feed the raw material into hammer mill directly. Hammer can only deal with particles smaller than 1 cubic inch. So shredder or chipper is needed before using the hammer mill. There is a changeable screen in the hammer mill. The size of the holes on the screen is related to the diameter of your pellets. For example, if you want to make wood pellets with 8mm pelletizer die, you are recommended to use screen with 6mm holes. But some of us prefer 4-5mm screen in this situation in order to decrease the error efficiently. Because with a 6mm screen, the particles may have a diameter less than 6mm while the length may be longer. This example requires a 4-5mm screen, some particles may need be larger in other cases. Generally speaking, the particle size needs to be below the pelletizer die diameter.

By reducing the raw material size with a hammer mill, we can also increase the pellet productivity. Pelletizing is a process about getting heat into the raw material to melt the lignin in particles. And it is much easier with smaller particles. By logic some body may say that why not use a 1-2mm screen. On one hand, this will dramatically reduce the hammer mill productivity. On the other, this will bring potential issues for the pelletizer machine. Remember in the pelletizer machine, the dies and rollers should not touch and it supposed to have about a 1mm gap between them. That is to say, pelletizer machine cannot work well if the particles are too small.
